Marketing the Final Frontier
Date: 2010 - 2015
Client: LunarEmbassy.com
Overview
This project focused on redesigning and modernizing a series of direct-to-consumer eCommerce websites selling extraterrestrial land, including property on the Moon and Mars. While the concept was unconventional, the business challenge was very real: transform aging websites into modern, conversion-optimized platforms capable of handling global traffic, gifting purchases, and media-driven demand.
Lucky Web Design was brought in to prove a simple point: with the right strategy, design, and technology, you can market almost anything... even land on other planets.
The Challenge
The Lunar Embassy brand had enormous name recognition, media exposure, and cultural curiosity dating back to the early 1980s. However, much of the web presence had remained largely untouched for decades, creating challenges around:
Outdated website design and UX
Limited mobile and responsive support
Aging eCommerce infrastructure
Missed conversion opportunities despite strong interest and novelty
The need to preserve brand recognition while modernizing the experience
Additionally, each site had to balance humor and wonder with enough credibility to make customers feel confident purchasing a truly unique product.
The Solutions
Lucky Web Design led a full redesign and platform modernization across multiple properties.
Lunar Embassy – Brand & Platform Modernization
The Lunar Embassy website was redesigned using a custom Twitter Bootstrap theme built on Magento, creating a responsive, scalable foundation that could finally bring the brand into the modern web era.
The updated platform supported:
Informational pages and storytelling
Product pages for land purchases
Photo and video galleries
Media credibility and educational content
A streamlined purchase experience
The goal was to respect the brand’s legacy while giving it a platform ready for “infinity and beyond.”
Results & Impact
Successfully modernized legacy brands without losing recognition
Improved mobile usability and conversion performance
Enabled scalable global eCommerce for novelty products
Extended the commercial life of a concept spanning decades
Demonstrated the power of strong UX and platform design, even for unconventional products
These projects became a playful but powerful proof point that good marketing fundamentals apply everywhere, even off Earth.
Strategic Takeaway
Whether it’s SaaS, finance, travel, or extraterrestrial real estate, the principles remain the same: clear messaging, strong branding, frictionless UX, and scalable technology. This case study stands as a reminder that with the right execution, there’s no such thing as an unmarketable idea.
